Lori Aprahamian - Head of Global Mobility at Principal Financial

 

We have had the chance to speak to Lori Aprahamian, the head of global mobility for Principal Financial Group, a worldwide retirement, insurance and asset management solutions provider. With more than 22 years of experience in the global mobility and relocation field, she has previously held leadership positions at notable companies such as Barclays Capital and PricewaterhouseCoopers. In our short Q&A with her, Lori gives her sincere advice to assignees and new global mobility executives.

 

 

Q: Could you please describe your current role and responsibilities at Principal Financial Group?

A: I lead the development and end-to-end service delivery of Principal’s US Domestic Relocation and Global Mobility Programs. I provide consulting support to HR and leadership on all global talent sourcing needs while managing tax and global compliance spanning across Principal's global locations. As the global business and economic demands continue to change, I work with our internal mobility teams to enhance and design global mobility policies and assignment models that are competitive, cost effective, consistent and globally compliant.

Q: What are the characteristics that contribute to an employee’s success on an international assignment? On a domestic assignment?

A: Characteristics of a successful transferee are being self-motivated, resilient, curious, flexible and open-minded.

Q: What advice would you give somebody new to a career in the Global Mobility Industry?

A: Always be open and receptive to change and ambiguity. Continue with advanced mobility training to stay abreast of global and local economic changes and trends. Establish a network of trusted industry peers and specialists as you will never have all of the answers.
